Extended ­Double ­Release Sophie Thun

In her analog, multi-layered works, Sophie Thun negotiates the relationship between photography and reality. She breaks the seamless illusion of the medium and reveals – by unveiling the mechanisms, (physical) performances and locations – the processes inherent in image production. In her photograms, for example, we see impressions of the artist’s body created in the darkroom, the second and otherwise invisible site of photographic (re-)production. The presence of the body creates an absence in the image that exposes the inability to capture the human body on a two-dimensional surface. Even in this very direct transmission, the imprint or the photogram cannot holistically represent the living, breathing and feeling body.
